I’m sorry but that sounds like a ‘conspiracy theory’ comment made without knowledge of the day-to-day realities of naval operations in the Gulf over the past 20+ years.
Tensions are indeed very high right now, but to suggest that the British boarding situation was a ’set-up’ ignores the reality that merchant ships are boarded by Coalition naval ships all the time in the area and that many, many people in the navies of Italy, UK, Australia, Pakistan, US, etc. work extremely hard to comply with the law of the Sea.
It also ignores the differences in territorial claims that the Iranians and most of the international community make about what constitutes territorial waters.
Let us just pray that the sailors and marines are able to return home safely and that the high tension over the fissile material enrichment program and continuing clashes of Iranian and coalition interests in Iraq will not lead to a miscalculation of intentions on either side.
Eric… I think an “Active” conspiracy might be too far of a stretch for me right now. To imagine someone in the British gov’t saying “sail that ship in there” is about as odd as someone in the American gov’t saying the name of an undercover CIA agent jut to get even with his wife.
But passive, yes, or collusion, as the word goes. A passive conspiracy of convenience. “Oops: your men got arrested. Can we help?”
ON the other hand, I watch Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister (BBC comedies from 1980-85) often enough to know that no conspiracy is too far-fetched.
