I who have written this story, or rather this fable, give no credence to the various incidents related in it. For some things in it are the deceptions of demons, other poetic figments; some are probable, others improbable; while still others are intended for the delectation of foolish men. Saturday in Passion Week

Today’s Station: San Giovanni a Porta Latina

Missa: MISERERE Mei

INTROIT: Psalm 30: 10, 16, 18
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am afflicted: my eye is troubled with wrath, my soul, and my belly: My lots are in thy hands. Deliver me out of the hands of my enemies; and from them that persecute me. Let me not be confounded, O Lord, for I have called upon thee. V. (Psalm 30: 2) In thee, O Lord, have I hoped, let me never be confounded: deliver me in thy justice. Let the wicked be ashamed, and be brought down to hell.
REPEAT: Have mercy on me…

COLLECT:
May the people prosper who are devoted to Thee by the affection of pious devotion, we beseech Thee O Lord; that instructed by the holy rites, they may be made more pleasing to Thy majesty, and more may they abound in excellent gifts. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen

2nd COLLECT: Against the persecutors of Holy Mother Church
We beseech Thee, O Lord, mercifully to receive the prayers of Thy Church : that, all adversity and error being destroyed, she may serve Thee in security and freedom. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen

EPISTLE: Jeremias 18: 18-23
IN those days they said, “Let’s develop a plan for dealing with Yirmeyahu. Torah won’t be lost from the cohanim, or counsel from the wise, or words from the prophets. So come, let’s destroy him with slander; and meanwhile, we won’t pay attention to anything he says.” Pay attention to me, ADONAI! Listen to what my opponents are saying! Is good to be repaid with evil? For they have dug a pit [to trap] me. Remember how I stood before you and spoke well of them, in order to turn your anger away from them? Therefore, hand their sons over to famine, hurl them into the power of the sword, let their wives be made childless and widows, let their husbands be slain by disease, let their young men be slain by the sword in battle, let screams be heard from their houses when you bring raiders on them without warning. For they have dug a pit to catch me and have laid snares for my feet. Nevertheless, ADONAI, you know all their plans against me to stop me. Do not forgive their crime, do not blot out their sin from your sight; but let them be made to stumble before you; deal with them when you are angry.

GRADUAL: Psalm 34: 20, 22
For they spoke indeed peaceably to me; and speaking in the anger of the earth they devised guile. For they spoke indeed peaceably to me; and speaking in the anger of the earth they devised guile.

GOSPEL: John 12:10-36
At that time the head cohanim decided to do away with El`azar too, since it was because of him that large numbers of the Judeans were leaving their leaders and putting their trust in Yeshua. The next day, the large crowd that had come for the festival heard that Yeshua was on his way into Yerushalayim. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Deliver us!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of ADONAI, the King of Isra’el!” After finding a donkey colt, Yeshua mounted it, just as the Tanakh says — “Daughter of Tziyon, don’t be afraid! Look! your King is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt.” His talmidim did not understand this at first; but after Yeshua had been glorified, then they remembered that the Tanakh said this about him, and that they had done this for him. The group that had been with him when he called El`azar out of the tomb and raised him from the dead had been telling about it. It was because of this too that the crowd came out to meet him — they had heard that he had performed this miracle. The P’rushim said to each other, “Look, you’re getting nowhere! Why, the whole world has gone after him!” Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greek-speaking Jews. They approached Philip, the one from Beit-Tzaidah in the Galil, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Yeshua.” Philip came and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Yeshua. Yeshua gave them this answer: “The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Yes, indeed! I tell you that unless a grain of wheat that falls to the ground dies, it stays just a grain; but if it dies, it produces a big harvest. He who loves his life loses it, but he who hates his life in this world will keep it safe right on into eternal life! If someone is serving me, let him follow me; wherever I am, my servant will be there too. My Father will honor anyone who serves me. “Now I am in turmoil. What can I say — `Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. I will say this: `Father, glorify your name!’” At this a bat-kol came out of heaven, “I have glorified it before, and I will glorify it again!” The crowd standing there and hearing it said that it had thundered; others said, “An angel spoke to him.” Yeshua answered, “This bat-kol did not come for my sake but for yours. Now is the time for this world to be judged, now the ruler of this world will be expelled. As for me, when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He said this to indicate what kind of death he would die. The crowd answered, “We have learned from the Torah that the Messiah remains forever. How is it that you say the Son of Man has to be `lifted up’? Who is this `Son of Man’?” Yeshua said to them, “The light will be with you only a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, or the dark will overtake you; he who walks in the dark doesn’t know where he’s going. While you have the light, put your trust in the light, so that you may become people of light.” Yeshua said these things, then went off and kept himself hidden from them.

A Homily on the Gospel Passage From Matins for the Day
by St. Augustine the Bishop

They saw with their own eyes this Lazarus who had been raised from the dead ; and they knew that the miracle which the Lord had worked was very great, for it was spread abroad by so many witnesses, and was so plain and manifest, that it could neither be concealed nor denied. Thereupon they invented an expedient ; and see here what it was, to wit : The chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death. O foolish consultation! O blind cruelty! Could not the Lord Christ, who was able to raise him who had died a natural death, raise up also the slain? Would killing Lazarus paralyze the Lord? But if ye consider that there is a difference between a man dead of disease, and a man slain, behold, the Lord hath raised up both. For the first raised up Lazarus, who had died a natural death, and then himself, who had been slain.

On the next day much people that were come to the Feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna : Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Palm branches are praiseful symbols which tell of victory. The Lord was now ready to overcome death by dying, and to carry the victorious banner of his Cross in triumph over the devil, the prince of death. The cry with which he was greeted, namely, Hosanna, is índicative of strong sentiment more than anything else, as we are assured by some who are acquainted with the Hebrew language : and is a shout after the manner of interjections, as they are called, just as in our own tongue, when we lament, we say Alas! or when we are pleased, Aha!

These were the shouts of applause with which the crowd greeted him : Hosanna! blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the Name of the Lord! What an inward torture of jealousy must the Jewish leaders have undergone, when they heard that great multitude hailing Christ as their King! But, for the Lord, what was it to be King of Israel? To the Monarch of all worlds and ages, what mattered it to become a King of men? For Christ is not King of Israel in the sense of monarchs who exact tribute or arm hosts with weapons to conquer enemies that are seen. But he is the King of Israel in the sense that he is Lord of our intellect, a Ruler whose power shall never wane, and who openeth a kingdom in heaven to all such as centre in him their faith, their hope, and their love.

OFFERTORY: Psalm 118: 12, 121, 122, 42
Blessed art Thou, O Lord, teach me Thy justifications : and give me not up to the proud that slander me : so shall I answer them that reproach me in any thing.

Mercifully free us, we beseech Thee, O Lord, from all guilt and dangers, whom Thou hast made partakers of so great a mystery. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen

2nd SECRET: Against the persecutors of Holy Mother Church

PREFACE OF THE HOLY CROSS
It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God : Who didst establish the salvation of mankind on the tree of the Cross: that whence death came thence also life might arise again, and that he, Who overcame by the tree, by the tree also might be overcome: Through Christ our Lord. Through Whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the Heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it.

COMMUNION: Psalm 26: 12
Deliver me not over to the will of them that trouble me; for unjust witnesses have risen up against me; and iniquity hath lied to itself.

POSTCOMMUNION:
Being filled with the abundance of Thy divine gift, we beseech Thee, O Lord our God, that we may ever live by its reception. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen

2nd POSTCOMMUNION Against the persecutors of Holy Mother Church
We beseech Thee, O Lord our God, that Thou wouldst not suffer to be exposed to human dangers those to whom Thou givest to rejoice in this divine banquet. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen

PRAYER OVER THE PEOPLE:
May Thy right hand defend Thy suppliant people, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and duly instruct them, who being purified in Thy sight, may by present consolation attain to the good things to come. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen
