Setting the record straight

This may be a function of my living outside the country in question. I am therefore subjected to limited and biased reporting. So here’s a question for my Israeli (or former-Israeli) readers:
Why did last year’s gay pride parade in Jerusalem spark international protests - including from the Pope! - while this years seems to have caused no such troubles at all?
A letter from the Pope and the massed objections of all the conservative religious leaders in Israel is certainly overkill compared to “a group of yeshiva boys [who] danced and sang religious songs at the top of their lungs.”
