Christ is Risen!

Be Poets of the Logos!

Sarx (σαρξ) is the Greek word for "flesh". This is the blog of a Southern Man (sojourning in Buffalo, NY) attempting to follow God in the way of Jesus.

I am a priest in the Russian Orthodox Church in America (ROCIA). We are growing a Mission community here in Buffalo.

I who have written this story, or rather this fable, give no credence to the various incidents related in it. For some things in it are the deceptions of demons, other poetic figments; some are probable, others improbable; while still others are intended for the delectation of foolish men. Mac Maya Calendar

Being a Calendar Geek, I love anything to do with calendars. My favourite real-world calendar is the Mayan combo of the tzolk’in and the Haab’. So I was rather happy to find it this morning as a (Mac) Dashboard Widget available for free download. I’d like it as a Menu Bar app, but ok. This produces a full stele for each day. Clicking around the new software, however, I found the next best thing! If you use a “My Google” homepage you can add the tzolk’in to that page!

Today’s Stele

The calendar is very complex, using a 20 day cycle in a 13 day month and an 18/20 day cycle on a 365 day year… It moves through multiple permutations like a full community of whirling dervishes with symbols on their robes.

My favourite non-real world calendar is the Shire calendar from Middle Earth. I like it because it’s regular, not fluctuating. All months are 30 Days. The same day of the month falls on the same day of the week. Sunday is always the first of the year, the 3rd of April is always a Monday. The seasons are regular, the quarters as well. It’s logical, like a computer. (There is a LOTR Calendar hidden in your OS X but, sadly, it’s not a cool widget.)
