The Cerne Abbas Giant was long thought to be a prehistoric hill figure showing a powerful fertility god. Other theories favoured a Roman depiction of Hercules wielding his club. Recent dating of the disturbed soil indicates that it is much more recent. It is now thought to be a caricature of Oliver Cromwell and mocks his self agrandisement as the great all powerful leader. Probably cut on the instructions of the local Catholic landowner at the restoration of the Monarchy.
