Today’s Station Church

On Monday in the second week of Lent, the station is at San Clemente or St Clement’s Basilica.

It has one of my favourite mosaics, as well as a Mithraeum or Temple to Mithras in the basement. It also has a curious presbytery, marked by low walls in the middle of the nave. These mark a parallel space to the Mithraeum, - with the altar of the basilica directly over the altar of Mithras. Clearly this is one of the places where the ancient mysteries just carried over to the more recent ones!
