Judaism does not see itself as the One True Only way to do things. According to even the most conservative of Rabbis, for Gentiles there are the 7 laws of Noah - and most of them are covered by a decent government and good taste. (Decent laws and avoiding roadkill for food will take care of all, I think, but the issue of sexual immorality and idolatry.) There is no need to convert in order to "get saved" according to Judaism. I will say that the rabbi who said that conversion is not necessary is the exact copy of the Eastern Orthodox ethnic priest who discourages non-(Greeks, Russians, etc.) from becoming Orthodox.
