Pascha Nostrum.

In the middle of tonight’s reading from the Hebrew scriptures:
Exodus 12:4 If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it.
And suddenly in the middle of the sermon, it hit me. Plug that odd bit of economical instruction from Exodus into the line of thought expressed here…
1 Corinthians 5:7 For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed
Ephesians 2:14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.
Beyond the issue of what does the atonement “really” means, the first thing that came to me is that any group that thinks it can stand alone is, in fact, too small for the whole lamb. The only household big enough for this is all of us.
