From 14 April 1973:
In April 1973 “All In The Family”, “Sanford & Son”, and “Hawaii 5-0″ were leading the pack on TV, and “The Godfather”, “The Candidate”, and “The Poseidon Adventure” were leading the pack at the Academy Awards. Meanwhile in Hollywood the king of all countdowns Casey Kasem was preparing his weekly American Top 40 show so you could hear the biggest hits in all the land!
Here are the lyrics. Name the songs. As always, fewer words mean I think you’ll find it too easy; and the answers will show up Monday night. Deodato’s Also Sprach Zarathustra (radio version), a funky instrumental, was in this countdown at #14. This gave Mr Kasem a chance to expound on the Zoroastrian prophet. He did this without mentioning any of the other religious themes that popped up in this countdown - which I found interesting. Duelling Banjoes was also in this countdown: no lyrics though. Pity, cu’z you sure do have a pretty mouth…

Here are the ones that jumped out at me - these quizzes are great!
2) Ohio Players - Funky Worm
4) Reeling In The Years - Steely Dan
6) Walk On The Wild Side - Lou Reed
7) Dead Skunk By Loudon Wainwright III
8) Carpenters - Sing(???)
9) My fellow Greek Tony Orlando and Dawn - Tie A Yellow Ribbon
10) The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia by Vicki Lawrence.
I seem to have only gotten the ones that have been drilled into my head by years of classic rock and oldies radio. I have an Ohio Players collection and Dead Skunk, well, how can you not know Dead Skunk? :)
