Ah, yes, I remember it well. One of the Kent State victims had attended Michigan State University briefly and had the same name as my MSU roommate freshman year. We had occasionally received mail meant for him, although that was two years before the tragedy.
She was 14.
“What if you knew her,
And found her dead on the ground?
How can you run when you know?”
I played there as a child the following sumer.
My father was getting his graduate degree and we lived on campus. We met him each day after his last class outside of the mathematics building.
My brother and I and the other grad students’ preschoolers rode our tricycles on those campus sidewalks, and rolled down that very hill until we couldn’t breath for giggling so hard. Then we ate lunch by the memorial bell. We knew students had died, but in ways to a child the adult world, even if it’s events were the day before, seems like ancient history. And yet death happens outside of time as well.
Having never seen black squirrels before, we had gray and we only lived a town away, and red squirrels although sighted were as rare as a silver fox, the black squirrels native to Kent Ohio were somehow linked with in my child’s naturalist mind with something tragic, gothic and otherworldly.
Like Billy Holiday singing Strange Fruit, and Neil Young’s shaky voice, Edgar Allen Poe and Sherlock Holmes bedtime stories, and the murder of crows that arrived with spring. How does man blame God for evil ever, when it is so obvious that is man which acts against men?
Yesterday I saw still photos from a Kent student film I was in that summer. I didn’t know they existed. The plot in five photos involves me trading a ride on my tricycle to an adult for a Payday candy bar. I didn’t recall that detail, but it is odd that I nearly subsided on those during my own art school years at University.
What is we trade when we go to war? We in the U.S. represent only 6% of the world’s population, and as the wealthiest of nations that leaves 94% worse off in health, education and quality of life. We’ve lost over 4,000 lives, compromised 10,000 more, and killed countless others, spent 10 times what it would have cost to rid the world of malaria on taking war to two countries in order to protect our prosperity, and our petty little national interests and the decadent lifestyle we are accustomed to.
We choose this, me and you, because we feel it is our right to choose.
Pray for the departed, pray for our leaders, pray for our salvation, Lord have mercy on us.
