Being "white" is still the default, and any addition to the neutral white canvas is seen as aberration. Which is exactly why it IS amazing that Obama has been nominated-- that a man casually dismissed as "black" by those with this subtly racist mindset (which apparently consists of the majority of this country) has gotten this far.
