Memory Eternal!

George Carlin reposed last night.
Great sadness…
Added later…
In an early segment of History of the World, Part I, Mel Brooks plays Comicus, a Stand Up Philosopher. Some of our modern comedians have filled this role perfectly.
Three comedy albums stick in my head from my youth: Bill Cosby’s Why is there Air and Wonderfulness and George Calin’s Class Clown.
By the time I was in 8th Grade I could recite whole portions of these Albums, in a near-perfect imitation of the voices used by the stars themselves.
Yes, they were “dirty” (George, moreso than Bill), but they were also profound: George’s discussion of his Irish Catholicism on the second side is not only funny and risque, but a profound example of a modern man wrestling with an ancient set of doctrines. And I can still quote portions of these works, honouring their seminal position in my own brain.
I shall transfer some tracks to my iPod later to refresh my own ageing memory, although in my sadness the first thing that comes to mind is the Seven Words you NEVER say on Television.
