Protesting the Pope

T First glance, the news that Sydney overturned Pope protest law was confusing. Since Australia has “hate speech” laws on the books, I thought this was a clear evidence of “it’s ok to hate the church”.
But the Religious Tolerance website notes a curious loophole in Australia’s laws: seems that religiously-motivated speech is specifically protected from the hate speech law.
Thus, the overturning of the rules against protesting the popes visit make perfect sense: they shouldn’t dish it out if they can’t take it.
