The Periodic Table of Videos

ITH Props to BoingBoing, this is possibly one of the coolest science projects I’ve ever seen. The University of Nottingham is doing videos about each element in The Periodic Table of Videos.
Hmm. That Alvin-and-the-Chipmunks voice thing? I always thought it was because of some action of the helium on your vocal chords… but these guys say it is because sound travels faster in helium. How interesting is that?

I have always though that some enterprising time-trial competitive cyclist -the kind that shaves arm hair to gain .1 of second edge in a time trial - should inflate his bike’s tires with helium, since it is lighter than air. Hydrogen would be even better, of course, but that might have some unfortunate side effects.
I think that would work; the only problem would be that it would go flat fairly quickly.
It would make a bigger difference than you might expect, too; weight on the rim of the wheel counts for more, since it gives the wheel a higher moment of inertia, according to the square of the wheel radius.
Also, there’s not much on a bicycle that can ignite hydrogen, so that’s probably safe enough.
