I who have written this story, or rather this fable, give no credence to the various incidents related in it. For some things in it are the deceptions of demons, other poetic figments; some are probable, others improbable; while still others are intended for the delectation of foolish men. I stole this

RIGHT OUT OF A Facebook Profile. But I think we need to get the Gospel Message out there to all those heathens that are trying to CHANGE THE DIVINELY ORDERED INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE.

Besides: there should be 4 wives for Jacob.

I remember reading an editorial in Touchstone Magazine – an ultra-conservative Christian journal – that said whereas Christians can disagree about matters dealing with the economy, war and the environment, they cannot disagree when it comes to the sanctity of life (abortion) and marriage (gay marriage), seeing that the scripture is “crystal clear” on these matters. I always get suspicious with anyone who says that something is “crystal clear”. It’s a statement that reflects ideological thinking and an agenda. In Touchstone’s case, their agenda is to place patriarchal social values as essential to being a Christian. More Christians need to call them on this.

I always figured Touchstone was di rigueur for all those converts to Catholicism and Orthodoxy who wanted to continue fighting the Culture Wars.

Certainly! As a one-time writer for Touchstone (a sin for which I still make penance)… you are dead-on!

I didn’t write for them, but I attended the Orthodox parish right next store to their main office in Chicago. Kyrie Eleison!

I just had a thought about my reaction to those conservative Orthodox and Roman Catholic converts who continue to fight the culture war: why not just completely ignore them and instead carry on the work of the gospel by being compassionate to others rather than focusing on divisive issues? I think volunteering at a soup kitchen, participating in an AIDS charity, helping veterans out, speaking out against the occupation in Iraq or simply saying a kind word to somebody who needs to hear it (who knows, maybe even a conservative RC or Orthodox who’s still fighting the culture war) is a far better use of my time than calling”them” on it.

    Amen, James!

Pardon the meta-self-blogging, but that’s where I was going with my post on sinners in the church.
