Tonight’s Beverage

Shopping tonight at the Village Beer Merchant with Nate and Jay, I was intrigued by the descriptive line on the label of Dogfish Head’s “Pangaea”: A flavored malt beverage brewed with crystallized ginger. I knew it would be a little odd because it’s a “malt beverage” instead of a beer, but I kind of expected something identifiable.

To be honest it’s not very entertaining at all. Essentially the flavour starts out like Dogfish’s “Red and White” but it it remains in the starting mode: even as it slowing drew near room temperature, it never developed the complexity of Red and White.

The other direction this could have gone is the sweetness of ginger-ale or ginger-beer. I sort of expected that, to be honest. And while it is flat, as I indicated above, it still fails to be sweet enough – or to have enough burn – to be an alcoholic version of either ginger pop. Honestly, the ginger flavour is not pronounced enough – although it is present.

Failing in both directions to be either (dog)fish or foul, I rate this rather lowly on the scale. Whilst drinkable, it’s not worth it. For a brewery such as Dogfish Head, from which I expect greater and greater things, this is a bit of disappointment.

Dogfish Fail.
