Christ is Risen!

Be Poets of the Logos!

Sarx (σαρξ) is the Greek word for "flesh". This is the blog of a Southern Man (sojourning in Buffalo, NY) attempting to follow God in the way of Jesus.

I am ordained in the Independent Sacramental Movement, serving under the omophor of Bp Craig of the Universal Anglican Church. We are growing an Eastern Rite community here in Buffalo.

I who have written this story, or rather this fable, give no credence to the various incidents related in it. For some things in it are the deceptions of demons, other poetic figments; some are probable, others improbable; while still others are intended for the delectation of foolish men. I’m on a journey: God-ward, I pray. Love-ward. They are the same thing.Spiritually I’ve been Southern Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian, Pagan, Gnostic, Episcopalian again, Eastern Orthodox, Episcopalian again (3rd time’s a charm!)… What am I now?

You might want to say “he converts good” but I think it’s more honest to say I’m on a journey. I am a self-identified Christian (even when I was a pagan!). I believe God’s love for the world is real and that it was best shown to us in the person of the Preacher from Nazareth. That’s not enough, however: that love must be constantly shown forth in our lives daily. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” When we fail in showing forth that love the world goes dark. I will never be worthy of the love God has shown me. I hope to find how to best show that infinite love to others.

At the same time I’m warmly and deeply in love with the religion of Jesus, Judaism, not in the sense of being a “Jewish Christian” or what is often called a “Messianic Gentile” (God forbid!) but wondering if Jesus ever intended to start more than a movement, a kehilla, a community which got out of hand.

After all the journey, I’m at home in the Liberal side of the Anglican world – although some of my closest friends are on the conservative side. I’m convinced we need both to be the Church. I identify with the Liberal Catholic traditions of (lack of) doctrine.

I’m ordained within the Independent Catholic movement. With the blessing of my bishop we are planting an inclusive and welcoming community in Buffalo that worships according to the Eastern Rite.

I’m self-identified as a gay man. I made no choice to be attracted to men, but I do make a choice to act on it. I seek a way to shift “gay culture towards greater self-esteem and health, love, wisdom, social justice, personal responsibility, and sacred ways of living” (source) I believe it is possible for two people of the same sex to love each other and in that love mirror God’s love to the world. Yup: I have a boyfriend.

Until recently, I worked in a 42-day treatment programme for addicts and alcoholics. I’ve learned more about my own addictions (largely not-related to substance abuse) and my own co-dependency in these last few years than I care to note. I’ve learnt more about loving people where they are in these last few years than I care to note. I feel embarrassed that after 40 years as a religious person I’m only just now learning those things.

As of 1 February 2008, I’ve relocated to Buffalo – intending to be closer to Brodie and start again. I now work as an Executive Assistant for the owner of a construction-trades employment agency here in Buffalo. I live in a really awesome housing co-op with a bunch of fun folks. We’re not hippies and this is not a commune. Really.

I’m 44, a double Virgo and in Asian terms I’m Dragon/Monkey/Rabbit. In Vedic astrology I’m a Leo. Make some sense out of all that if you can.

I’ve a BA in Integral Studies from The California Institute of Integral Studies. I may get to seminary some day. But in what religion? I’ve fallen madly in love with life all over again (just recently, really) and I’m finding out what that means. I’m on a journey.

Rules of the Road

  • No expressions of hate will be tolerated – and yes, I get to decide what that is, because it’s my blog.
  • No commercial links allowed in your comments unless it is your, personal business *AND* I decide to allow it. Ex: Bill Gates may not comment and post a link to Microsoft. I’d think awhile about Steve Jobs.
  • I’m not here to debate theologies of different religions.
  • Everyone must have a real name – exceptions being if I know you in the flesh. Once you have a name, use it.
  • On the internet your words incarnate you: Live up to them.

Define “real name”? Link to an active blog that shows some depth of thought, have a real email address. My friend, “The Young Fogey” aka “Serge” aka “John” uses all his pseudonyms interchangeably, but one look at his blog will show you a real person, with real pictures. A google of his name will turn up a traceable, and respectable online history.
