Dan’s senior sermon.

This sermon, by a Graduating Senior at Jewish Theological Seminary, uses the iPhone as a prop. This is the coolest, most cutting edge piece of technology in the world.
We are living in a time, in a world, where we have a burning bush of knowledge in the palm of our hand and yet, we [...]

Avast Ye!

Via the Jewish Telegraph Agency: The discovery of an ancient cemetery in Jamaica has stirred speculation that Jews used to take part in piracy. This explains why so many pirates had beards.

Rosh Hodesh Adar I

This is a “leap year” in Judaism: there are two months of Adar. Normally one would say, “Be Happy, it’s Adar.” But my understanding is that, this year, that would be next month, in Adar II. (I may be wrong.) But Purim is next month - in Adar II. I note [...]

Christian-Jewish Emergent Conversation

A cool quote over at Synablog, from Tony Jones’ book The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier:
In the blogosphere, we began taking heat for even announcing the meeting, especially my quote in the press release that I was excited to meet with the rabbis to ‘‘talk about the future and God’s Kingdom.’’ Some of [...]

May their memory be Eternal!

Live or Memorex?

Here’s the rest of the earlier post “Is it really the Torah… I was on my way out the door when I got the email that led me to that post over on the Chabad website. It’s been a long day of car-related errands (Mom and Dad coming this weekend).
Here’s why [...]

Is It Really the Torah, Or Is It Just the Rabbis?

I believe in my heart that the Five Books of Moses and the Prophets are from G‑d. When it comes to the Talmud, however, I am beginning to believe it was made up over the centuries to control the Jewish believer with all its added laws. The rabbis add scores of laws to each of [...]

The epitome of nonconformity

I’m currently reading Rabbi Steven Greenberg’s Wrestling with God and Men. I’m only 25 pages in (I’ve noted before I’m a slow reader) and I find these three paragraphs, a gem that condenses my own experience and quest. I think the “Orthodoxy” in these paragraphs could be Christian or Jewish up to a [...]
