St Raphael of Brooklyn

St RAPHAEL of Brooklyn is my patron saint. I have recounted elsewhere why this is so. I referenced the document below, his pastoral letter on relations with Anglicans. It is interesting to note that many Episcopalians know that, for a while, the Orthodox in AMerica were permitted to worship in Episcopal Churches. This fact is often related by Episcopal Clergy. During my time as an Episcopalian it was never noted to me that this arrangement was in place for only about three years. I was never told that it had been rescinded, nor why. The fact remains that all of the things St RAPHAEL notes as reasons for cutting ties are still true, in most cases, they are more true now than when he wrote.

There is a life of St RAPHAEL on the OCA website, as well as several liturgical documents. The Magazine which he founded, The Word, is still in print, and the parishes he founded still flourish. He prays for us all!

Spiritual Biography

Please note: this rather long document was compiled for the vocations committee at my church, for their use in helping me discern a vocation in the body of Christ. Since writing this, I have converted to the Orthodox Church. This document is now the first of three...

I can remember in 1967, at the age of 3, singing "Jesus Loves Me" in the Presbyterian Church after Sunday School. In Vacation Bible School that summer, we sang "Jesus Loves the Little Children" in a park that was on a high river bank overlooking what was once the American Frontier: the Chattahoochee River, on the border between Alabama and Georgia.

In 1969, I gave my life to a God who scared me. A preacher told me that if I didn't pray the sinner's prayer I'd go to hell. At the age of five, hell and the fear of hell is a good motivator. Am I running to God or away from Hell?

In 1976, I stopped by the desk of my 5th grade teacher for a visit - it had been nearly a year since I left her classroom for Junior High. Mrs. Rubin asked me about a cross I was wearing and I said I wanted to be a minister.

After that it all gets a little cloudy.

Conversion

This document can also be D-Led as a text file (with a few HTML tags stuck in it and not so much editing work) here.

This is a continuation of my Spiritual Biography, a plot twist, if you will...

Why did I, a man once in the middle of the Episcopal Discernment Process (on his way to being maybe an Episcopal Priest) in the Diocese of California, get Chrismated on Sunday and received into the Orthodox Church?

Any answer to this question must be prefaced with a clarification, a confession and a caveat. I confess that when I left the Episcopal Church I did so with a finality that hurt people. I tried not to - I didn't want to - and I thought I had mustered up as much grace as I could in doing it. But I failed and left a good number of people angry and hurt. I spent part of April and parts of May of this year contacting folks, having dinner, and asking their forgiveness. That many of my Episcopal Friends came to my Chrismation was, in itself, a blessing I can not describe for I am unworthy of such friends.

The clarification is that this is as I understand it now... subject to change without notice. My version of this history is being reshaped as I see God's hand acting.

And the caveat: As an Orthodox Christian, I'm still a neophyte. I may be wrong on any of the theological or moral points that follow and I will submit to the Authority of the Church for correction if needed.

Confession

On 7 July 2002, by God's Grace, I was Chrismated and recieved into the Orthodox Church at Holy Trinity Cathedral in San Francisco. I am in the process of converting to Orthodox Christianity. Conversion is a long process: a daily event, a daily struggle, that lasts from prior to chrismation until after death. This is the third page of my spiritual biography - a daily process of conversion, confession, prayer and action. This is also a prayer for more faith. (I also recognize that different Jurisdictions of the Church word this differently...) It begins with the Nicene Creed and follows with an essay form of what the Bishop or Priest asks the convert.

I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things seen and unseen.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds; light of light, very God, of very God begotten, not made, being of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were created; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate, suffered, and was buried. And the third day He rose according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again in glory to judge both the quick and the dead, and His kingdom shall have no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father, Who with the Father and Son together is worshipped and glorified, Who spake by the prophets.

In One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins.

I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

Friends

Organizations

I would be horribly remiss at this point if I failed to mention my fraternity, Delta Phi. Many of my closest friends are also my brothers in this organization. The Chapter at NYU, Gamma Chapter, is the Nation's oldest continually active fraternity, having been chartered in 1841 and still going strong.

M. I. A.

The following are unfound, or missing in action. Through no fault of any one, these folks and I have fallen out of contact and I can't find them. If you know them, please give them my contact info! They would know me as Bill Bailey (or even "Billy" *shudder*).

  • Pace Yarbrough, last known address in Acworth, GA.
  • Michael and Michelle Rosenberg, last known address in Monticello, NY, moving to San Diego, I think.
  • Joe Bodek, last known address in Hoboken, NJ, moving to Eastern Europe and then to the South Eastern United States.
  • Nina Onishi, went to College with her. She's from NYC. Last rumored address in central Florida.

Heroes

Politics, theology and heroes all come out of the same place: the heart. You can tell a lot about someone when they list their heroes. This page used to contain a list of mine, but I don't think I have revised it since my first website in um... 1994? 95? When I converted to Orthodoxy, I found that my heroes were not exactly the same any more. The way I used to get moist and weepy reading about the life and sacrificial death of Bobby Sands (and, in fact, I still do somewhat) I now find that I get more weepy over the Sacrificial Life of St Raphael, or the poetic description of the life-giving death of Sts Ignatius and Polycarp. I'm currently working on more stuff to put here. I imagine it will be a page of icons with links to other pages (some off site, some on site)- why they are my heroes. So, having said that, here's three (there will be rather more)...

Blog Roll

This is the blog roll: I wanted it all in one place, and It was a lot of clutter on the front page. In discussions pver at Xanthikos, I said, that being on my blogroll means that I heartily recommend these sites. They are mostly Orthodox, mostly religious, and all edifying - even if their only edificatory ability is in laughter.

Narrow Path: Michael.

Aionios Zoe: Clifton's blog
Musings: Karl Thienes
Paradosis: my Brother James

Untamed Sky: Seraphim of Seattle
Garden Window: Elizabeth writes in the UK with a decidedly UK slant. (No, they're not related)
Jakob's blog is written in Denmark. And if you're wondering, he has a whole other slant.
Notes from a Hillside Farm and John writes from a sheep farm - or else a law office - in Virginia. Let me tell you: Orthodoxy is awesome.

Fr John: they're not related either.
